The story of Masako…

It all began with a story. The story of Masako, a young girl who, upon turning twelve, must face fears she isn’t quite ready for yet. To do so, she dives into a strange and thrilling adventure, crossing paths with the most curious and frightening creatures of Japanese folklore: the Yōkai.

How did the project start?

It all began as a simple story meant for a book, but it quickly turned into high curiosity in Japanese folklore and legends. After traveling to Japan, that interest only grew stronger and I couldn’t stop creating images inspired by that world… so Akai Bonsai came to life.

Today, it has become my most personal project and illustration series and the heart of everything you see in this shop. I’m not sure if that book it was born from will ever be published… but one thing’s for sure: like a real Yōkai, it has quietly found its way into many people’s homes!
